Residents of 6 different neighborhoods in the Greater Cincinnati Area have created 6 different original shows, each highlighting the characteristics that make their neck of the woods unique.

These are performances by the community, for the community.

This one of a kind theatre presentation is a movement towards a stronger, united community embracing diversity and sparking action for an equitable future.

My Block, My City is a program made possible largely in part by the support of the Ohio Arts Council.

Thank you!

MATTHEW DAVID GELLIN

Executive Artistic Director & CEO of American Legacy Theatre

Producer’s Note

My Block, My City. This project is 2 years in the making and only able to be done through the power of people.

Partnering alongside six pockets of our greater community and more community champions, we have been able to empower the voices of residents to:
1. Uplift their stories and emotional connections to the place they call home.
2. Write, design, and act in their own original production inspired by that emotional connection.

Working alongside ALT teaching artists, these core builders in the community explored, discovered, and are sharing so much of themselves in this process.

Additionally each pocket of the greater community is telling stories their own way through art that exemplifies them; and the core builders in these pockets are sometimes youth, or families, or adults only.

Most everyone was a stranger when this process began. However after building alongside each other for at least 20 hours, these strangers have become peers and even friends.

I am so glad you are participating in My Block, My City to bring these pieces to life. Because without you in the audience and engaging with these pieces, theatre would not be happening. You are just as important to this creative process. And so is your neighbor, as well as the person you don’t know.

So share these moments with others and find a deeper connection to yourself and someone else as you engage with My Block, My City.

Matthew has successfully acted and directed across the country, in Europe, and in Asia.

Matthew is proud to have served as a U.S. representative at the UNESCO
International Theatre Institute Research Lab in Romania. He was named a Promising Artist of the 21st Century by the International Arts and Cultural Exchange, and he has published papers on directorial theory in international peer-reviewed journals. He has also been recognized as one of Cincinnati Business Courier’s Forty Under 40.

His financial background includes serving as U.S. delegate to the People’s Republic of China for foreign business affairs and and serving on the Association of Fundraising Professionals Foundation for Philanthropy USA Board of Directors.

Now, he looks to lift American theatre back to the top of the world’s stage.

  • Elijah Webster

Elijah Webster is a Cincinnati-based artist with a passion for social justice, inclusion, and inspiring people to use their own creativity as an avenue for change.

Eli was first introduced to American Legacy Theatre as a sophomore in high school, where he got to be a part of the first ever rendition of the In Classrooms Students Create Change program, where he got to go through the process of creating his own original show, similar to what these community members got to do in this process. That was a life-changing experience for him, and he has been drawn to the American Legacy Theatre mission ever since. Throughout the years, Eli has worked on a variety of projects for ALT, such as working as a Teaching Artist in various school-based programs, stage management, tech operations, and performance booking before finally getting the opportunity to become a member of ALT’s full-time staff last year!

Outside of his deep love for doing all things theatre, Eli loves training dogs, playing music, lifting weights, and arranging acapella scores!

  • Alysun Ogilby

Alysun Ogilby is a Kindergarten teacher at Pleasant Ridge Montessori and she produced four shows with Jumpstart Theater. She came out of the womb singing show tunes and reciting monologues. This project has taken the cake. She has gotten to write and work with her own children and create something really wonderful from scratch! Her favorite part of directing is watching kids find their voice in the characters, but with this show, they got to create the whole moment AND make it come to life. It is beautiful to watch them blossom as a performer. She is also a huge fan of creating the choreography.

When she is not at PRM, she is hanging with her kids, reading books, swimming, or playing pickleball. She would love to thank ALT for giving them the opportunity to work together to write something real and honest. She’d also like to thank her kids because they put up with her countless in-home, unasked-for performances of all her favorite show tunes and prep for the stage. They inspire her to be a better human.

Community Happens Here

https://communityhappenshere.org

The concept behind Community Happens Here is how neighborhood generosity, co-working and various space rentals can sustain and fund programming for social good in Pleasant Ridge.

The programming has one primary goal: To seek and create ways for people to connect over social differences by softening and breaking through invisible walls that exist between people of different social and economic situations. We need to do more than nod to each other as we pass in the street or sit in the same row at a child’s performance. We aim to create an inclusive and supportive environment for new ideas, human connection and success.

Mary Kroner has done a lot of different things in her life, from co-owning Ruth’s Parkside Café to running a small arts program to setting ceramic tile, for example. She has studied movement and theatre, is a songwriter and storyteller and produces performance pieces when moved to do so.

Over the course of the past 3 years, she has raised nearly $10,000 with her one woman show, X Marks The Spot, for local non-profits doing environmental work. Her main thing is stirring up community, and this performance has been a new angle for her. She is very grateful to Tom Reese for jumping in with both feet and his big heart on this project.

  • Tom Reese

Tom Reese has always been a hop, skip or a jump away from the Theatre. As a teenager learning mime and improvisation with The Street Kids, in a Cincinnati neighborhood non profit group is when and where it all started. Developing original works supports his mission to play along as a mime, actor, director, puppeteer, poet and adjunct faculty, teaching artist and all around dreamer. Tom has an appreciative spirit for everyone and is often flabbergasted at almost everything else.

He has contributed as an instigator of fun for such groups as Fairview Impromptu Band Improv Theatre, Mimelight, Stone Soup Improv, On-the-line improv, Front Streep Cabaret and Valley Ridge Studio, Voices from the Earth Inc., My Nose Turns Red Theatre Comapany, Intuition Theatre Company, Cincinnati Story Theatre Company, Actors Alliance of San Diego, Comedy Sportz (Columbus), Cincinnati Arts Allocation Grant Recipient, Madcap Puppet Theatre and Cincinnati Recreation Commission. The invitation to work with Mary on an original theatre project is a privilege and a delightful excuse to step out of retirement….again.
